Born in Norway, Corey Gustafsson immigrated with his family to the US in 1916. They soon arrived in Portland, Oregon where Corey's father, Adolf, became a prominent landscaper. In the 20's and 30's, Corey became a founder of the Cascade Ski Club in Portland, and helped establish ski jumping and skiing in general as a popular sport on Oregon's Mt. Hood. Before WWII, Corey worked for General Electric. During WWII he was in charge of manufacturing skis for the US Army. After WWII he went to work for Mason's Supply Co. of Portland. In 1948, when Mason's Supply decided to get out of contracting, Corey took over that part of the business and Corey A. Gustafsson Company was born. Over the years his company worked on and helped restore almost every major building in Oregon, from the State Capitol building in Salem, to the Meier and Frank Building and Multnomah Public Library Building in Portland.
